Welcome to Episode 28 of the Blog it Today Tech News Weekly Podcast, it is nice to be home again after a long weekend and a few days away. There is nothing better than coming home and sleeping in your own bed. I talk a little about the Zero road toll we had over the long weekend break. People are still doing stupid things while behind the wheel, and I personally think the zero road toll was more down to luck and lack of vehicles on the roads.

Congratulations to the Manawatu Badminton U13’s Team 1 for winning the teams event at the Hawkes Bay Open on Sunday, Miss 11 also did did very well in the Individuals event on Saturday winning all bar one of her games.

After a bit of a messed up week last week, and then someone booked the car into the mechanic this morning which kind of blew out some of my plans. But, I’m in the studio again and things are hopefully back to normal again.

I have had a number of emails from people concerned about upgrading their Telecom NZ GT i5503T smartphones to Android 2.2 via the Kies application, I talk briefly about the whole process at the beginning of this show and how easy it was and also why I didn’t load a non Telecom rom onto my phone.

Welcome to episode 23 of the Blog it Today Tech News Weekly Podcast. I was beginning to wonder if this episode would be possible given that we were with out broadband for nearly two days.

Thanks Telecom NZ, you successfully stuffed up an entire day and then some. In this episode I talk briefly about an internet outage caused by Telecom upgrades done at the exchange, this could effect you in the near future so don’t get caught out like we did. Telecom will not tell you when / if this will happen to you. I do have to give the techies we dealt with some credit though. They were very helpful, a shame an international call centre let you down though.

Welcome to episode 22 of the Blog it Today Tech News Weekly Podcast. This podcast is proudly sponsored by Xunil Solutions.

Android 2.2 is coming to the Samsung Galaxy GT i5503T. If you’re like me and having an issue with the phone going into the coma, you’ll want to listen to what I have found out from @telecomnz on twitter.

Changes to the release schedule, I have decided to trial a new release structure for the next month. Over the next 4 weeks, I’ll be releasing the show twice a week. The show will be released on Tuesday and Friday for the next month. That’ll be 8 shows in the space of what use to be 4. I will be aiming for around 30 minutes for each show for this period. Please let me know what you think of the release schedule, Do you prefer 2x 30-40 minute shows per week, or 1x 1+ hour show per week.

Welcome to another jam packed episode of the Blog it Today Tech News Weekly Podcast. Things are getting cold around my area, winter hasn’t just snuck up on us, it’s dived in boots and all with a huge splash. Wearing multiple layers I think it’s getting near to the point of having to use heaters.

I have a couple of rants in this episode, namely using mobile phones while driving. Yes, you know that law that now says we can’t use handheld mobile phones while driving? well, seems some don’t care. Some moron just about crashed into me the other day while on her phone. Get off the phone Idiots…

Also, I have a quick (and yes it is a quick) rant about our crap broadband speed provided by our ISPs, In my case Telecom. Which is also linked to a story I cover near the end of the show about how we should be complaining louder about our inferior broadband speeds. Speak up New Zealand, we deserve faster more reliable broadband that what we are getting.

Well, Wake up to another April Fools day, and so another episode of the Blog it Today Tech News Weekly Podcast is here. I don’t get on the April Fools day bandwagon, In fact there are no articles covered in this episode with todays date. I briefly touch on an article which was doing the rounds that I understand a few people fell for, but that’s as far as it got for me. We get to do it all over again tomorrow when the rest of the world join us in the shenanigans of jokes. You have to love time zone differences. Ok, maybe not.

New workflow is implemented, and the show did run a little smoother and no computer crashes this week which is always an added bonus. I did however, have an issue with a phone ringing that was silenced. Need to look into that issue before next week so that doesn’t happen again.

Having spent the past week on ‘dial up speed’ broadband, apparently we used in excess of 20gig this past month, although I find that hard to believe I have a bit of a rant at Telecom New Zealand and question why we are still in the stone ages as far as internet connectivity is concerned. Will I ever get a reply from Telecom, Highly unlikely!

I was too quick to install the update and should have read the comments first. It seems that while Facebook fix one issue, they introduce more.

This update seems to have lost the ability to display images correctly. Personally, I seem to only have the issue of it not displaying my own profile picture, but others are reporting problems with it displaying photo’s anywhere.

Uninstalling then Re-installing the application appears to have no effect, nor does rebooting the phone. Time will tell to see how long it takes Facebook to resolve these issues being reported in version 1.5.2.

In the meantime, if you haven’t updated to version 1.5.2. I’d suggest you wait until 1.5.3 and then, I’d read the comments on the Facebook Android App wall before applying any future updates to the application.

Telecom has announced it will credit all residential customers’ landline calls to Japan. Telecom has said, this will also include phone calls made from landline to landline and landline to Japanese mobile phones.

Telecom has stated that the credit will be applied to calls made from midday Friday 11 March, to midnight Sunday 13 March, which will be applied to customers’ accounts in their next billing cycle.

“it was important for people to be able to communicate with family and friends in a time of crisis.” said Alan Gourdie, Telecom Retail CEO,

“As we have recently experienced a severe earthquake in our own country, we know only too well how essential it is for people to be able to connect easily with loved ones in the immediate aftermath of a tragedy. Telecom is therefore crediting all landline calling to Japan for the two days following the disaster,” said Mr Gourdie.

Telecom is also assisting members of New Zealand’s Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team who are using Telecom mobiles in Japan.

Roaming credit will be applied so USAR team members can stay connected with family and friends in New Zealand while they assist in Japan’s recovery effort.

Japan’s telecommunication networks remain under strain following Friday’s earthquake and tsunami, so people should be patient and keep their calls short where possible, particularly when calling Japan’s worst affected areas.

Well, at least for one section of King Street in Palmerston North. According to a media release from the Palmerston North City Council, Motorists will no longer have to put a ticket on display in their vehicle when parked in a new 100 bay installation of the parking system.

The Palmerston North City Council has now installed the first of the new parking technology with the installation of 100 bay sensors in King Street.

The new system moves away from the Pay-and-Display tickets to an electronic system. Motorists will no longer need to place a ticket in the vehicle windscreen.

Motorists using the new parking system will need to take note of the parking bay number which can be found on the edge of the footpath, directly in front of the vehicle. Instructions will be clearly displayed on each meter to guide people through the new procedures.

Motorists will notice that parking signage in King Street has changed. Parking times are not displayed on street signage, but are now displayed on the meters. Parking in King Street still remains at two hours.

Parking charges also remain the same and receipts will still be available from the parking meters for those who require them.

PNCC staff with the aid of parking machine technicians have worked hard to ensure a smooth transition to the new system, but some delays may be experienced. PNCC would like to thank the public for their patience.

It is anticipated that all parking meters in the city will be upgraded to the new system by June 2011.

I am using purely Linux systems in the studio as of last weekend. I’m Double recording this episode, one with my Digital audio recorder but also with Audacity under Ubuntu Linux 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat).

I’ll be using the Audacity created mp3 for this episode, however I will be returning to only recording my digital recorder as it does make my life much easier. Not having to switch between application as much to deal with the recording is nice.

In this episode I briefly talk about analogue television being turned off next year. Now is the time to upgrade your family if you haven’t already done so.
