Facebook for Android Update

If you’ve been following the Facebook for Android page, or simply have auto notifications of updates via the Android market. You will have noticed there is an update for Facebook for Android. Although not everyone is happy.

This update brings the version up to 1.5.2 and claims to improve the following

  • Added the ability to upload photos to friend’s Walls
  • Upload photos to Groups
  • Photos will always upload with the correct orientation
  • Improvements to landscape mode
  • Improved security using SSL
  • Various bug fixes

I was too quick to install the update and should have read the comments first. It seems that while Facebook fix one issue, they introduce more.

This update seems to have lost the ability to display images correctly. Personally, I seem to only have the issue of it not displaying my own profile picture, but others are reporting problems with it displaying photo’s anywhere.

Uninstalling then Re-installing the application appears to have no effect, nor does rebooting the phone. Time will tell to see how long it takes Facebook to resolve these issues being reported in version 1.5.2.

In the meantime, if you haven’t updated to version 1.5.2. I’d suggest you wait until 1.5.3 and then, I’d read the comments on the Facebook Android App wall before applying any future updates to the application.

Ok, Thanks to a guy on Facebook by the name of Leon Hayfield here is a fix. This is copied from a comment posted at http://www.facebook.com/android/posts/10150126860490909

For everyone having problems and wants to roll back to Ver 1.5.1.
    Uninstall updates via Manage Applications

(optional extra for rooted users…Uninstall factory Facebook app with Titanium Root)

    Go to

    http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/facebook-for-android

on your device browser, scroll down to Old Versions and select 1.5.1.

Download and install Facebook.apk. Version 1.5.1 restored
1.5.2 is a total mess and it seems the developers here are not listening to us!!!

Well, Facebook are claiming to know about this issue, in fact I’m seeing reports on the Facebook for Android app wall that people are saying it is fixed.

Facebook have said no app update would be required for those running 1.5.2 which suggests it was a server side issue. I rolled back to v1.5.1 so can’t confirm that it is fixed.

I think I’ll leave it a few days and keep an eye on the comments before re-upgrading to 1.5.2.

Ok, I have installed Facebook for Android v1.5.3

So far so good, It does what it says it does.. Still have some testing to do but at least they didn’t break more than they fixed this time around.

Some people are still complaining of issues, but overall the consensus seems to be it’s a good update.
